Spiritual Peaks

"The highest spiritual peaks

Christian thought to ponder...

As we travel the highest spiritual peaks, can we fall into dark spiritual valleys?

The answer is yes. Elijah, God's prophet, discovered this when Jezebel attempted to discredit him and threatened his life. He ran, he was terrified, and he abandoned his ministry. He begged God to let him die.

1 Kings 19:2-4 (ESV)
2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” 3 Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
How easy it is for us when things get tough to want to give up and flee from our troubles and hardships. Depressed and exhausted, Elijah was in a state where he couldn't go on any further. But, how great is our God, how wonderful He is, and how good God is! God provided for Elijah, He cared for him, and He strengthened him. He restored Elijah's ministry.
1 Kings 19:5-8 (ESV)
5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” 8 And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God.
There will be peaks and valleys as we journey in this world. But great is our Lord! He brings light into the darkness. He gives hope when there is despair. When you are in those darkest valleys, call upon the Lord. He will strengthen and restore you just as he did for Elijah.

Psalm 40:2 "He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along (NLT).

Heavenly Father,
You are great and mighty. You are faithful and true. We thank you that we can depend upon you when have fallen into the dark valleys in our lives. We thank you that you strengthen and restore us in our greatest time of need. Help us to stay focus on You and seek you when all seems hopeless and dark.
Amen.
